HELP A MARYVALE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR IN FOSTER CARE PREPARE FOR A LIFE
ON HER OWN.
Maryvale,
a foster care facility for girls in Rosemead, is looking for mentors
for senior high school girls. Volunteers for Maryvale Senior Friends
join a therapeutic team of counselors and group home personnel who
work together for the benefit of each foster youth.
Each volunteer will stay with an assigned girl through her entire
senior year and for six months after emancipation, helping her
establish her place in the community. Depending on her individual
needs, the mentor may decide to work with her on survival skills,
help with job hunting skills and practice, look for further
educational opportunities, and assist her in setting up her new
living environment. It is important that the mentor and her senior
girl are in contact regularly, at least once a week, either by
visit, phone call, or off-campus excursions. There will be an
orientation during the first two weeks of September, exact time and
date TBD.

NEEDS
BACK-TO-SCHOOL-BACKPACK-STUFFERS
The
East LA-based Violence Intervention Program (VIP) is seeking volunteers
in mid-August to help stuff back-to-school backpacks for over 300
children who have been victims of abuse or are in the foster care
system. This is a great one-time event for busy volunteers and those who
want to get to know VIP. Back packs will be dispersed August 26, so VIP
needs volunteers in the weeks leading up to that day to help stuff
donated supplies into backpacks. Exact date and times are flexible
throughout mid-August, so please express your interest now and VIP will
get back to you.

HILLSIDES NEEDS TUTORS FOR SCHOOL YEAR
Hillsides is recruiting volunteer tutors for the coming school year
(September through May). Tutors are asked to commit one hour a week
in the evening to provide one-on-one help with homework for youth
who are residents at the center. Ages for students range from 7 to
18-years-old and a tutor can pick the age group that he or she feels
most comfortable with. The tutor will work with the same student
throughout the school year.
